Finding it challenging to fit everything in this December? Desperately wanting to maintain your usual exercise routine or start personal training sessions but finding it tough?
This Christmas season, allow yourself to let go of unrealistic expectations, to laugh when plans go awry, and to find peace in the quiet moments that matter most. Christmas isn’t about how flawlessly we decorate or how many tasks we tick off; it’s about leaning into love, gratitude, and the simple magic of being present.
You’ve got to flip the script with an ‘all or nothing’ mindset; instead choose to focus on small, sustainable habits this December. Making good choices (most of the time) at this time of year, will make you feel much better. Don’t be too hard on yourself, stop the doom scrolling and enjoy the extra sausage roll, or glass of fizz and relax into the festive season.
Here are some of my personal non-negotiables in December, sharing in the hope you will find these helpful.
- Move a little every day. Even if you don’t get a full workout done, show up and do something, even 15 to 20 minutes is better than nothing.
- Embrace the outdoors. It can be miserable at this time of year and dark by 4pm, if you feel it’s safe to do so, grab a head torch and head out for a stroll to get some fresh air and feel refreshed. There’s nothing quite like getting home after a cold winters walk to a hot brew.
- Stay hydrated. This can be tough in winter especially not to mention a bit boring! So, experiment with smoothies (for breakfast or lunch) my go-to favourite is some oat milk, a banana, peanut butter, 30g of granola and a spoonful of Greek yoghurt. Keep a water bottle handy (it helps to cut down on those 3pm cravings and manage the ‘festive drinks.’
- Eat regularly and consistently. Try to avoid showing up starving to a xmas party. Fill up on protein and fibre beforehand so you’re not tempted by cheese (my personal downfall) and endless savoury-based snacks. A small bowl of granola or porridge works wonders!
- Go with it – this is not the time of year to start a highly restrictive diet or aim for perfectionism. Embrace each moment with family and friends
